The production of Sam Kekovich’s Australia Day rant has become an annual tradition for Jungleboys and BMF Sydney. For 2012, things were stepped up a bit with the production of the parody “Barbie Girl” music clip in addition to the 90 second “Rant” TVC.

The music clip collides LA Hip Hop with the Aussie back yard barbie. It was shot over two days at a property on the outskirts of Sydney and was a major production involving over 70 cast and crew. As well as Sam Kekovich, the music video features Melissa Tkautz, Justice Crew and a cameo by Richard Wilkins.

Sam’s Rant was shot on an office set specially designed to split in half revealing a “TV Spectacular” set behind – complete with glitter canons and dancing girls. Further visual effects work was done by David Mosqueda and his team at Emerald City Design to dramatically increase the scale of the reveal scene.

Both the “Rant” and the “Barbie Girl” clip were directed by Craig Melville and launched on the Nine Network’s “A Current Affair”. Following the launch, both the “Rant” and the “Barbie Girl” clip went truly viral. This included thousands of Facebook posts, trending on Twitter and well over 300,000 views on YouTube within a few days of launch.

Behind the Scenes Video, put together by the good people at CumminsRoss. It shows the fun times on the Nestle Soleil shoot down in Melbourne. All our shoots are exactly like this, by the way. More like a party in motion than a job.

It was, in reality, a great couple of days. A fantastic team. Really, the worst part was the interview for this thing.

Director Leigh Richards recently completed work on a PSA for the Black Dog Institute. The Black Dog Institute is a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to helping people cope with depression and mood disorders. It runs various programmes and initiatives, including a yearly “Exercise Your Mood Week”, encouraging people to combat depression through regular physical exercise. Through generous support from Jungleboys EP Jason Burrows and the donated services of key crew and talent, the Black Dog Institute “Exercise Your Mood” PSA became a reality.

The shoot took place in Maroubra in early July, produced on next to nothing by Sarah Harris. Among those who generously donated their time and talent to the project were Michael Clumes Marden Dean, Chris Bland, Joe Brunetto, Maren Smith and Sean Corcoran. The wonderful black dogs featured in the spot were Bear (courtesy of the Kedar Family), Loretta (Dan Miau) and Guide Puppy-in-training Finn (Alexandria Bulgin). Post was handled in-house at Jungleboys by editor Greta Jackson and designer Melissa Pragassen. Grade provided by Emerald City Design. Music composed by Ryan Grogan and voice over by the extraordinary  Brendan Cowell.

The aim of this spot was to illustrate the idea that physical exercise can help to elevate mood and lessen the effects of depression. It was a great opportunity to pursue a creative idea in the service of an organisation that does so much to help give people a peace of mind. ‘Lose Your Licence and You’re Screwed’ is a new campaign for the Motor Accidents Commission targeted at youth drivers. Directed by Al Morrow, this campaign promises social death if you loose your license and freedoms – much more impactful to teens than physical death…Mum picking you up from training, making out in the presence of a taxi driver and doubling your mate on a tandem seem to be the best the alternatives to driving.

Shot in and around Adelaide, the ash cloud, rain and cyclonic winds did not defeat the production. And the result is a funny snap shot of everyday life with embarrassing outcomes. Although it wasn’t all work. Some vineyard tours were also on the agenda of course.
